2022 Volkswagen new cars
Volkswagen’s 2022 will see it launch five new performance cars, updates for its largest and smallest models, a new off-road ute, and its first plug-in hybrid.
After a busy 2021 – even if its sales figures, heavily affected by stock shortages, don’t show it – Volkswagen Australia has outlined plans to launch at least 10 new models in 2022, across nearly all of its car and SUV model lines.
Kicking off the year will be the delayed arrival of the Caddy California campervan over the next few months, completing the new-generation Caddy van and people mover line-up, alongside a newly-introduced TSI220 petrol engine option.
April will see the launch of the new Volkswagen Amarok W580X off-road ute – developed with Australian engineering firm Walkinshaw, following 2021’s road-focused W580 and W580S models – along with a facelifted Polo city car, in standard and sporty GTI forms.
The first of Volkswagen’s new-generation R performance models, the Golf R hot hatch and Tiguan R medium SUV, will also arrive in April – though the first examples on local soil will be powered by a detuned 235kW/400Nm engine, rather than the 420Nm variant offered overseas.
Due in May is the facelifted Tiguan Allspace seven-seater – following the updated five-seat Tiguan launched in 2021 – with a more practical wagon variant of the Golf R to arrive around the middle of the year.
The facelifted T-Roc small SUV will launch in August – now offered in high-performance R trim – ahead of Volkswagen Australia’s first plug-in hybrid, the Touareg R large performance SUV, slated for launch in November.
