2022 Mazda new cars
Four all-new SUV models are in development and under consideration (or already confirmed) for Australia, plus new additions to the BT-50 range, and upgrades for CX-5 and MX-5.
Get ready for a big year from the zoom-zoom brand, as Mazda strengthens its SUV range with as many as five all-new models, plus updates to the strong selling CX-5 and BT-50 ranges. And, while there’s no more news on the rotary front (beyond word of a range-extender rotary version of the MX-30 SUV), Mazda’s sole sports car, the MX-5 roadster, will also be refreshed in 2022.
In an announcement in October, Mazda confirmed that the all-new CX-60 SUV will come to Australia in 2022. Pitched at European and Japanese markets, the two-row, five-seat CX-60 might be joined locally by a three-row CX-80 (a likely successor to today’s CX-8), while the wider-bodied two-row CX-70 and three-row CX-90 models are tipped for North America.
There’s also a CX-50 for US and Canadian markets – based on the smaller CX-30 – but it won’t be offered in Australia.
Australian CX-60 engines will hopefully mirror Europe with SkyActiv-X inline-six petrol and SkyActiv-D inline-six diesel engines – both with 48-volt mild-hybrid systems – along with a four-cylinder petrol-engined plug-in hybrid option.
Mazda Australia said the new CX-70, CX-80 and CX-90 SUVs are all under consideration for Australia, but declined to say when a decision would be made. If all these models do come here, it’s likely that some would supplant rather than supplement existing models in Mazda’s SUV range, comprising the CX-3, CX-30, CX-5, CX-8 and CX-9.
An update to the resurgent Mazda BT-50 ute arrived in late December 2021 – just ahead of its planned January arrival date. It gets a new entry-level XS grade – available in 4×2 single-cab, 4×2 dual-cab, or 4×4 dual-cab layouts – powered by a new 110kW/350Nm 1.9-litre turbocharged diesel engine shared with its twin under the skin, the Isuzu D-Max. A new SP variant is also on offer.
Mazda’s most popular model, the CX-5 medium SUV, receives a selection of exterior updates and suspension tweaks to keep it fresh amid the launch of the CX-60 later in 2022.
And lastly, the MX-5 will receive a Model Year 2022 update in January or February adding a new Kinematic Posture Control suspension system, new colours and trim options, and the axing of the entry-level 1.5-litre engine. The current-generation model, the ND MX-5, was launched in 2015, making it one of the oldest cars in Mazda’s line-up.
