2022 Volkswagen ID. Buzz teased – UPDATE: March 9 reveal confirmed

The all-new electric bus will launch next year, and could be offered in Australia.

UPDATE, 8 January 2022: Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess has confirmed the 2022 Volkswagen ID. Buzz will be revealed on 9 March, European time – with the announcement joined by a brief teaser video showing a sketch of the new model (embedded below).

Our original story continues below.

5 November 2021: The upcoming 2022 Volkswagen ID. Buzz – effectively a modern-day electric interpretation of the German brand’s iconic Kombi bus – dropped most of its camouflage overnight, giving us the best look yet at what the vehicle will look like when it hits public roads next year.

During the ID.5 SUV reveal in Europe on Thursday, the new people mover briefly flashed on the screen with a rainbow ‘dazzle’ colour scheme, but no cladding or the clever black and white vinyl wrap used on prototypes in recent months.

The vehicle has been toned down significantly from the original 2017 concept, with new headlights, a reworked ‘grille’, traditional side mirrors, and production-ready sliding doors.

While specifications are yet to be revealed, the MEB platform which underpins the bus has previously been fitted with dual electric motors combining for an output of 220kW (in production form).

According to unconfirmed online reports, an 82kWh lithium-ion battery pack will permit an approximate range of 400km.

The 2022 Volkswagen ID. Buzz has previous been spied testing autonomous technology, and will – according to previous comments from executives – launch in some markets with self-driving capabilities.

Volkswagen does not currently offer an electric car to Australian buyers, however a spokesperson for the company’s local arm told Drive: “This is a vehicle we’d very much like to bring in – to get the Kombi would be huge for our market.”

“The Kombi has a strong association with Australia and surfing culture, so we’d love to see it. However, electric vehicles are often prioritised for markets with more stringent emissions regulations.”
