2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric price and specs

Volvo’s popular electric SUV has gained a more affordable single-motor variant, alongside a broader facelift for the entire XC40 range.

  • 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric pricing and specifications
  • Single-motor variant added with less power, lower price
  • Facelifted dual-motor gains new wheels, matrix headlights
  • Priced from $72,990 before on-road costs

Australian pricing and specifications for the facelifted 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric small SUV have been announced, ahead of first deliveries expected in the third quarter of 2022 (July to September).

Following overwhelming demand for the pre-facelift, dual-motor electric XC40 launched in August 2021 (for Model Year 2022, or MY22), the updated MY23 range will see the introduction of a new (and more affordable) single-motor model in Volvo Australia showrooms.

The wider 2023 XC40 Recharge Pure Electric range – and eventually all XC40 variants, petrol, hybrid or electric, as revealed in November – benefits from a restyled front end similar to the coupe-styled C40, with sharper headlights, a frameless grille and revised intakes, plus new wheel design and rear bumper inserts.

Priced from $72,990 before on-road costs, the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric Single Motor is $4000 less than the sole MY22 electric variant – and $7000 less than the MY23 dual-motor model, which has risen in price by $3000 (to $79,990) as a result of new Pixel LED headlights, a new 20-inch wheel design, and new sustainable upholstery (in addition to the aforementioned range-wide updates).

Powering the MY23 Single Motor model is a 170kW/330Nm electric motor on the front axle, paired with a 69kWh ‘Standard Range’ battery for a 7.4-second 0-100km/h time, and a 180km/h limited top speed.

Volvo Australia claims an “expected” WLTP range claim of 380km, though Volvo’s European websites list 423km – compared with 418km for the dual-motor variant, courtesy of a larger 78kWh battery.

Said dual-motor flagship employs dual 150kW electric motors for combined, all-wheel-drive outputs of 300kW and 660Nm, good for a 4.9-second 0-100km/h time. Both XC40 models offer 150kW DC fast charging.

Full standard specifications are yet to be announced for the single-motor variant, though Volvo has confirmed it will offer 19-inch alloy wheels, Google infotainment software (likely running on a 9.0-inch screen), LED headlights, wireless phone charging, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, and a reversing camera.

The ‘Twin Motor’ will add new Pixel LED headlights – Volvo’s brand name for matrix headlights, which can blank out part of their beam so not to dazzle oncoming motorists – plus a “new wheel design” (expected to measure 20 inches in diameter), and a new ‘sustainable’ seat upholstery material.

The introduction of the single-motor variant follows overwhelming demand following the MY22 XC40 Recharge Pure Electric’s launch in August 2021, with the electric SUV accounting for 21 per cent of all Volvo Australia sales in September – and the entire Model Year 2022 allocation selling out by the end of November.

“Demand for XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is unprecedented as Australians embrace electric cars in increasing numbers. Our forward order book has never been stronger,” said Volvo Car Australia Managing Director, Stephen Connor.

“The introduction of the single motor variant in 2022 will enable us to respond to this extraordinary demand with even a more affordable Pure Electric option.”

“We have secured a minimum of 20% production growth for 2022 and we will continue to push for even more production to meet the demand of the brand. If our factories can keep up, then our volumes will hit 15,000 units [total Volvo sales] in the near future.”

The 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is slated to arrive in Australia in the third quarter of 2022 (July to September).
