Australian road safety guru elected new Global NCAP chairman
Long-time road safety advocate, and former Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) chairman, Lauchlan McIntosh, has been appointed the new chairman of the Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP).
ANCAP chairman between June 1994 and October 2015, and president of the Australian College of Road Safety (ACRS) since 2007, McIntosh (pictured top left) was elected Global NCAP’s new chairman at an annual meeting in Antwerp in Belgium, taking over the reins from former FIA president and Formula One safety campaigner, Max Mosley (pictured top right), who retires from the position he’s held since Global NCAP’s establishment in 2011.
“I am very honoured to be elected as Global NCAP’s new Chairman,” McIntosh, a Global NCAP trustee, said.
“Global NCAP’s work has fundamentally changed vehicle safety worldwide, I’ve been proud to be part of that work as a member of the board of trustees and look forward to continuing to do so as chairman.
“I want to thank Max [Mosley] for his leadership and great work – he has been a true champion of road safety and an inspiration.”
Executive director of the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) between 1994 and 2006, McIntosh is both a former director of the International Roads Assessment Program (iRAP) and a former president of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Australia.
In 2007, thanks to his long-standing contributions to the development and promotion of road and motor vehicle safety, as well as safety reforms in his former field of the mining sector, McIntosh was appointed a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia.
McIntosh will now help lead Global NCAP in its pursuit of its publicised vision, highlighted by a world free from road fatalities and serious injuries, and one where all new cars in production by 2020 exceed minimum United Nation crash test standards for pedestrian protection and for electronic stability control.
Earlier this year, in the wake of the Ford Mustang’s shock two-star Euro NCAP and ANCAP safety rating, CarAdvice spoke with Lauchlan McIntosh one-on-one, to gain an insight into how far vehicle safety has come, where it is today, and where it’s headed in the future.
