2022 Mercedes-Benz and AMG new cars

It’s been a big year for Mercedes-Benz but 2022 is set to be even bigger, with the German car maker strengthening its electric vehicle campaign and launching a long list of new vehicles Down Under.

Over the first 11 months of 2021 Mercedes-Benz sold a total of 26,466 vehicles, up 0.6 per cent on the same period in 2020. The German car maker managed to outsell its main competitors in BMW and Audi, with the A-Class range accounting for the greatest share of sales across its line-up.

This year (2022) is set to be a mega year for the brand, launching twice the number of vehicles it did in 2021 and continuing its electric vehicle assault.

Kicking it off in the first half of next year is the Mercedes-AMG EQS53. The high-performance upper large vehicle will initially be the sole EQS variant available in Australia, with cheaper variants possible at a later date.

Adding to the brand’s upper large line-up is the Mercedes-Maybach S680 – the range-topping variant in the S-Class line-up. It uses a 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged V12 petrol engine, sending 463kW and 900Nm to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The EQA is the brand’s smallest electric vehicle and next year, it gains a new variant in the EQA350 4Matic – with the EQA300 offered overseas not coming to Australia. It scores a pair of electric motors, paired to a 66.5kWh lithium-ion battery to produce 215kW and 520Nm.

The car maker’s most powerful series-production car yet also launches in 2022, known as the Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance. This is also Mercedes-AMG’s first plug-in hybrid model. It packs the brand’s familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8, paired to a 150kW electric motor for combined outputs of 620kW and more than 1400Nm.

The all-new SL soft-top roadster will launch, with two variants on offer in the entry-level SL55 4Matic and flagship SL63 4Matic+. Both will fit Mercedes-AMG’s 4.0-litre turbocharged petrol V8, paired to a nine-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission. Pricing is yet to be confirmed, with a PHEV reportedly also in the works.

The next medium SUV due in the line-up is the EQB – the electric version of the GLB. Local specifications are yet to be confirmed, however it’s expected Mercedes-Benz Australia will offer front-wheel-drive EQB250 and all-wheel-drive EQB350 options – the latter producing over 200kW and featuring all-wheel drive.

The flagship EQS electric limousine will now have a younger sibling, with the EQE set to launch in the back half of next year. Just one variant has been detailed so far in the EQE350 – packing a single electric motor on the rear axle, good for 215kW and 530Nm. The approximate driving range claim (according to Europe’s WLTP cycle) just surpasses 652km.

While timing is still not set in stone, the new C-Class is set to arrive before the year is out. The range will include the C200, powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder, capable of 150kW (and likely 300Nm), along with the C300 which boasts a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder producing 190kW (and likely 400Nm).

Mercedes-Benz Vans will introduce its first electric vans in Australia with a trio of models – the eVito (in panel van and Tourer people mover guises), along with the EQV people mover.
