Toyota GR Corolla base model off the cards for Australia
Toyota Australia says there are no plans to offer a basic, sub-$60,000 version of the GR Corolla hot hatch which is available overseas.
Toyota Australia says it currently has no plans to offer a cheaper and more basic version of the just-released 2023 Toyota GR Corolla hot hatch.
The Toyota GR Corolla range in Australia starts with the five-seat GTS model priced from $62,300 before on-road costs, and tops out with the two-seat GR Corolla Morizo from $77,800 before on-road costs.
In other markets such as the United States, Toyota offers a cut-price GR Corolla ‘Core’ version, with less equipment and a lower price tag.
Speaking to media at the GR Corolla’s local launch, Toyota Australia product and pricing manager Justin Doods said: “(Toyota Australia) is pretty comfortable with our strategy. Our GTS model sort of sits between the US-market Core and Circuit [Edition].

“Then obviously we have the Morizo model above that, so we’ll monitor customer feedback, but I think we are pretty comfortable at this stage.”
Key omissions from the US-market ‘Core’ model include limited-slip differentials for the front and rear axles – parts that are standard-fit on Australian ‘GTS’ versions.
Other standard equipment to Australian GR Corolla GTS models which could be removed includes front and rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate-control air-conditioning, a heated steering wheel, and JBL eight-speaker sound system.
All of these features have been removed from the hardcore, track-focused GR Corolla Morizo two-seater to save weight, with a price tag of $77,800 before on-road costs – making it the most expensive Toyota Corolla ever sold in Australia.
