2021 MG HS Plus EV Essence: owner review

I was interested in a hybrid-model car – no real tie to any brand, but then came across the MG HS Plus EV model.

What we love
  • I love that I can charge my car with my home solar panels and then use this for all my weekday use
What we don’t
  • The position of the EV button
  • To run the heater, the engine has to run – can’t run on EV

I was interested in a hybrid-model car – no real tie to any brand, but then came across the MG HS Plus EV model. I wasn’t familiar with plug-in hybrids. I did my research and it fitted into my ideal of how I’d like to help with climate change.

I really like that you can use the car as an EV for everyday use, and then the economy and convenience of the combination of petrol and EV for longer trips, as I live in a rural area. I like the legroom in the front and rear seats. There’s plenty of storage for passengers in the interior of the car.

I don’t like the position of the EV button. It’s not really in your line of sight. Also, the ‘current journey’ mode resets each time you stop the car, which is a little annoying, as I’d like to measure how many kilometres I get with each charge. To run the heater, the engine has to run – it can’t run on EV.

I love that I can charge my car with my home solar panels and then use this for all my weekday use. Everything else is fabulous!

Driving it, I find it has a very smooth transition from EV to petrol mode. It’s very comfortable to drive. There’s lots to learn about the technology in the MG HS Plus EV, and I aim to learn one thing each day.

The safety features are fabulous, and the reversing camera is so helpful, especially if you have a bigger vehicle park beside you. I love the heated seats and the retractable sunroof. You can’t open the boot unless you put the car in park mode, which I am still getting used to.

It’s been extremely reliable.

To make it better, they should have a different placement of the EV button and a more prominent icon on the dashboard screen. You can’t tell it’s in EV mode unless you look down at the button, which means taking your eyes off the road.

I have already recommended to a friend that they buy one!
