2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5: Next order round opens on Wednesday

Another 100 examples of Hyundai’s new Ioniq 5 electric SUV will be made available next week, to buyers in all regions bar the ACT and Northern Territory.

Hyundai Australia will re-open order books for its in-demand 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric SUV next week, for six of Australia’s eight states and territories.

Following three prior order rounds since September, another 100 Ioniq 5s will be made available by Hyundai Australia next Wednesday, 23 March at 1pm AEDT (NSW, VIC and TAS time), for buyers in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania.

Omitted from the latest round in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) – which has not been offered the chance to order an Ioniq 5 since December – and the Northern Territory, where order books last opened in the first round in late September.

The latest allocation will be distributed in the same manner as those before it, with buyers able to place a deposit online from 1pm AEDT on

Wednesday, ordering one of two variants at fixed, non-negotiable prices.

As per past allocations, orders from all states across all order rounds will be sent to the factory for production at the same time – meaning buyers who placed orders in late January won’t receive their vehicles before those placing orders next week.

“We decided to separate the timing for the regions to ease the pressure on the online ordering system … [It’s] important to note that this does not affect delivery timing of the vehicle (i.e. just because NSW ordering opened first, it does not mean they get first priority on vehicle arrival/allocation),” a Hyundai Australia spokesperson explained to Drive in January.

No changes will be made to the model range, meaning buyers will be given a choice between a rear-wheel-drive variant priced from $71,900 before on-road costs, or an all-wheel-drive model from $75,900 before on-road costs, both with identical standard equipment levels.

Both are powered by the same 72.6kWh lithium-ion battery, paired to one rear-mounted 160kW/350Nm electric motor or two motors across the axles for 225kW/605Nm. Driving range according to WLTP testing is claimed to sit between 430km and 451km.

More affordable model grades and a smaller 58kWh battery are expected to be introduced in Australia later this year. The enlarged 77.4kWh battery available overseas won’t be offered locally for the time being.

Next week’s order round will bring the total of Ioniq 5 vehicles available in Australia since its launch late last year to approximately 496 – of which 248 have been reported as sold to the end of February 2022.

That compares to 500 examples allocated to the Ioniq 5’s twin under the skin, the Kia EV6, for the entirety of 2022.
