Subaru Japan has revealed a motorsport-ready version of its BRZ sports car.
Called the ‘BRZ Cup Car Basic’ model, it’s designed as a factory-prepared motorsport base vehicle that comes with a six-point roll cage – complete with side intrusions bars – and enlarged air-to-air engine oil cooler as standard from the factory, as well as a distinct lack of alloy wheels.
Why the steel wheels? Because these motorsport-orientated Subaru BRZ coupes are destined to have upgraded brake, wheel, and tyre packages fitted by privateer racers before competing in the nation’s GR86/BRZ Cup.
Held since 2013, the Japanese GR86/BRZ Cup has become a proving ground for upcoming and seasoned Japanese racing car drivers.
Mechanically, the BRZ Cup Car Basic features the same 173kW/250Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual as the regular road car.
Although a ‘race base’ vehicle, the 2022 Subaru BRZ Cup Car Basic still features modern technology such as keyless entry, LED headlights, and 8-inch infotainment system.
If you’re wanting to order one from a Subaru dealer in Australia, tough luck – the 2022 Subaru BRZ Cup Car Basic is currently offered only in Japan.
It’s priced from ¥3,338,500 including the country’s consumption tax, or approximately $AU40,000.
