“Much faster” Tesla Supercharger V3 opens in Sydney
The new high-speed charger is the first of its kind in New South Wales, and joins examples in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia.
Electric vehicle specialist Tesla has opened a new ‘Version 3’ Supercharger – currently the fastest charging system it offers – in the South Sydney suburb of Kirrawee.
The site is located within the South Village shopping centre at 580 Princes Highway, and offers six stalls for simultaneous charging.
With a maximum flow rate of 250kW, the technology – which was revealed by Tesla in 2019, and described by CEO Elon Musk as “much faster” – can top up a standard Model 3 sedan from empty in approximately half an hour. Almost 120km of range can be added in just five minutes.
Several examples already exist in Melbourne, Perth, and at ‘The Bend’ race track near Adelaide, however Drive understands the Kirrawee charger is the first ‘V3’ site in NSW.
While Tesla has previously suggested Supercharging will eventually be made available to all electric car owners, in Australia the infrastructure is currently
offered exclusively to Tesla customers.The service costs 52 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in Australia, up from 42 cents per kWh in early 2020. Parking within the South Village shopping centre is free for the first three hours.
