2022 Mazda MX-5 price and specs

Mazda has updated its iconic sports car, with a new dynamics system, more equipment as standard, and new options – but the 1.5-litre engine has been axed, and prices have risen.

  • 2022 Mazda MX-5 pricing and specifications
  • Base 1.5-litre engine axed amid slow sales
  • Entry Roadster and RF grades add safety, convenience kit
  • Kinetic Posture Control system added, among other items
  • Priced from $37,790 before on-road costs.

The updated 2022 Mazda MX-5 sports car has arrived in Australia, with new features and more power as standard – but higher prices as a result.

Headlining the update is Mazda’s axing of the entry-level 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine previously exclusive to the base Roadster variant, with all MX-5s now featuring the more potent (and more popular) 2.0-litre engine as standard – click here for more details.

As a result, prices have risen by $1700 for the entry-level Roadster variant (with either transmission) – though this is partly offset by new features, including lane departure warning, driver attention alert, rear parking sensors, rear autonomous emergency braking, an auto-dimming rear view mirror, and LED daytime-running lights.

Prices have risen by $700 on the entry-level RF retractable hardtop variants – which have always had the 2.0-litre engine, but for 2022 gain the aforementioned niceties – with the rest of the range up $400.

It’s worth noting these price rises listed are inclusive of a $100 price increase in effect from February 1.

New for 2022 is a Kinetic Posture Control (KPC) dynamics system – previously referred to as Kinematic Posture Control – which, in short, applies a small braking force to the inner rear wheel during cornering, designed to pull the body down and reduce body roll.

Mazda claims this KPC system – which does not make the vehicle heavier, given it is largely new software for existing braking and suspension components – sharpens the MX-5’s handling, with “no change in terms of everyday driving situations”.

Other new features for 2022 comprise a Platinum Quartz Metallic colour available across the range, and the addition of a Terracotta nappa leather option for the RF GT – though only when the Black Roof variant is selected.

A full list of standard features for all MX-5 Roadster and RF variants is included at the bottom of this story.

All models are powered by a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, which was revised in late 2018 to develop 135kW (at 7000rpm) and 205Nm (at 4000rpm), towards a 7500rpm redline.

Drive is sent to the rear wheels through a choice of six-speed manual and automatic transmissions in base and GT variants, or only the manual gearbox in the track-oriented GT RS grade. Kerb weights range from 1052kg in the Roadster GT RS manual, to 1134kg in the RF GT automatic.

Available colours include the new Platinum Quartz Metallic finish, plus Snowflake White Pearl Mica, Machine Grey Metallic, Jet Black Mica, Soul Red Crystal Metallic, Polymetal Grey Metallic and Deep Blue Crystal Metallic.
