2022 Mitsubishi new cars

While the new Outlander borrows heavily from Alliance partner Nissan, the incoming plug-in hybrid variant will offer a little more Mitsubishi flavour.

The importance of the Mitsubishi Outlander is difficult to overstate for the Japanese car maker. It’s the first of its new models to benefit from the fruit of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

It’s Mitsubishi’s main offering in the highly-competitive medium SUV segment, but also treads into the large SUV segment with its slightly bigger footprint (compared to its competitors) and third row of seating.

An all-new model, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander shares its underpinnings with Nissan’s new and incoming X-Trail. That means a Nissan engine and Jatco-tuned continuously-variable (automatic) transmission (CVT).

However, the incoming plug-in hybrid variant of the Outlander will pick up some additional Mitsubishi-designed running gear. After all, Mitsubishi does claim to be something of a pioneer in this regard.

Electric-only driving range and overall power figures are said to be improved for the incoming Outlander PHEV, and it will mange to retain its three rows of seating, even with the hybrid powertrain.
