Hyundai N Vision 74 goes on sale… as a remote-controlled electric car

The highly-anticipated Hyundai N Vision 74 concept is entering production, on a significantly smaller scale than enthusiasts wanted.

The desires of automotive enthusiasts for Hyundai to put its radical N Vision 74 concept car into production have been met – just not on the scale many desire.

Just 18 months after Hyundai showed off the N Vision 74 in July 2022, the South Korean car maker has launched its retro-futuristic model as a remote-controlled (or RC) car.

It adopts traditional battery power rather than the hydrogen system of its concept counterpart, and is one-tenth the size of the show car which was inspired by the 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupe concept – styled by Italian design icon Giorgetto Giugiaro, who later penned the iconic DeLorean DMC-12 of Back to the Future fame.

The concept’s wild wings, extended wheel arches and aero-disc wheels are carried across to the 1:10 scale RC car, though it appears the block-like 8-bit LED lights are just stickers.

Unfortunately the N Vision 74 RC car is exclusive to Hyundai’s home market of South Korea now – with a price tag of 498,000 South Korean won, equivalent to almost $570 in Australian currency – however the car-maker says “availability to be expanded to other markets in the future”.

It is not yet clear whether the N Vision 74 will go into production as a road car, with the most recent reports out of South Korea suggesting just 100 examples will be made –  though 30 of these are understood to be reserved for a one-make racing series run by Hyundai across North America and Europe.

The report – by South Korea’s ET News – claimed 100 versions of the N 74 coupe are expected to be fuelled by a hydrogen fuel-cell which supplies energy to a small battery, in turn powering a pair of electric motors on the front and rear axles.

In September 2023, Drive uncovered a trademark filing for ‘Hyundai N74’ in Australia, which is yet to be approved by IP Australia.
