Melbourne-based author and stylist Chantel Mila has amassed 1.3 million TikTok followers for her short videos on deep-cleaning appliances, kitchens, clothing and beyond.

One of her most popular recent videos shares five tricks for cleaning the carpets, cupholders, boot and headlights in your car.

In the video, which has now garnered almost 750,000 views, Mila shares the methods she uses to clean her Toyota RAV4 – but warns some of them should be “patch tested” first.

Mila’s tips include:

  1. Use a rubber squeegee (the kind you’d normally use on your shower) to dislodge hair and small fibres from car floor mats before vacuuming them.
  2. Use cleaning slime (like this) to remove dust from hard-to-reach spots like cupholders.
  3. Use lemon oil on a microfibre cloth to clean and polish leather seats and leave them smelling fresh.
  4. Use a soft, wet microfibre mop to clean your car’s exterior (you can purchase mops specially designed for cleaning car paint finishes).
  5. Sprinkle baking soda on a lemon or just use a plain lemon to make your headlights sparkle.

Of course, it’s worth taking these tips with a grain of salt and applying logic based on your car’s individual finishes.

For example, ensure the mop you’re using is new and free from grit to avoid damaging your car’s paint.

Additionally, be wary of over-using lemon and baking soda on your headlights, as the acidity could strip the UV protective layer off and accelerate the rate of your headlights fading.

We’d also recommend patch-testing the lemon oil trick on a section of your seat that’s out of sight, in case the brand of oil is particularly heavy, or your car’s seats are overly absorbent.

In an earlier video that has now received over 323,000 views, Mila shares more car-cleaning tips – specifically designed to target tricky spots in the car’s interior, like cupholders and door bins.

These include spraying a linen spray onto your floor mats to help them smell fresh for longer, using a grout-scrubbing brush to clean narrow storage areas, and wrapping a cleaning cloth around a drink bottle to wipe down cupholders more easily.
