Supercar seized: ACT Police impound speeding Ferrari
Police in the Australian Capital Territory have cracked down on dangerous driving by suspending the licences of six speeding motorists in less than a fortnight.
A speeding Ferrari F8 supercar has been seized by police in Canberra after it was clocked driving at 59km/h above the posted speed limit – highlighting a week of idiots on the road in the nation’s capital.
In a media statement, ACT Policing said the Ferrari drove past a stationary police car at a detected speed of 139km/h on a 80km/h speed limit stretch of the Monaro Highway at approximately 11am on Sunday 2 July.
The driver – a 43-year-old from the suburb of Griffith – was issued an on-the-spot Immediate Suspension Notice, banning them from driving for 90 days.
The Ferrari F8 Tributo – which cost $485,000 when new – was also seized by police, who hold the right to impound vehicles involved in dangerous driving offences for up to 90 days.
According to Inspector Paul Hutcheson, Officer in Charge of ACT Road Policing, dangerous driving will be targeted by police in Canberra throughout July, following the introduction of new anti-hoon laws from June 22.
“As we’ve already seen, police will target drivers travelling at excessive speeds, and seize licences and vehicles where appropriate,” Inspector Hutcheson said in a media statement.
“This important change allows police to take immediate action against an offender, taking away their vehicle or licence, and thereby their means to commit further offences.
“Throughout July, police will also target intimidating driving, burnouts, tailgating, menacing driving, and street racing.
“We will not tolerate these unsafe driving behaviours, or people who want to turn public roads into their own personal drag strip or racetrack.
Since the new laws were introduced, six drivers – including the Ferrari’s pilot – have had their driver’s licence or driving privileges revoked by ACT Police.
On June 25, a 19-year-old P-plater from Banks lost his licence for three months after a police radar detected his Mazda 3 driving at 147km/h in a 90km/h zone, also on the Monaro Highway near Fyshwick – resulting in a $1847 fine.
On July 1, a 22-year-old man from Giralang was pulled over by police who had been conducting routine speed checks.
The man reportedly produced a cancelled learner licence and police officers discovered the car was not roadworthy – seizing the vehicle and issuing fines totalling $3059 to the driver.
On July 3, a 21-year-old P-plater from New South Wales became the fourth driver to have their right to drive in the ACT suspended after she was caught driving her Mazda 3 at 133km/h in a section of Erindale Drive in Fadden with an 80km/h speed limit.
The driver accrued six demerit points and was fined $1847.
The fifth and sixth drivers to have their licence suspended for 90 days were caught street racing each other at almost midnight on July 5.
According to ACT Policing, the drivers – a 17-year-old boy and 18-year-old male – reached speeds up to 105/kmh in a 60km/h zone on Athllon Drive near Phillip.
