Porsche integrates car controls in Apple CarPlay
Porsche owners can now manage air conditioning, navigation, radio, photos, and ambient lighting within the Apple CarPlay interface.
Porsche has become the first automotive manufacturer to integrate vehicle functions – such as air conditioning, ambient cabin lighting and the in-built satellite navigation system – within Apple CarPlay.
The first Porsche model to benefit from this integration will be the latest Porsche Cayenne, before the feature is rolled out to other models.
For almost a decade, Apple CarPlay has been a popular feature available in many cars, allowing users to display and control Apple phone device functions such as navigation, music, phone calls, messages, and podcasts from their infotainment screen in a layout that mirrors their phone’s native operating system.
But features such as air-conditioning controls have required vehicle occupants to exit Apple CarPlay and use the car’s native operating system – assuming there are no physical dials, switches, or external shortcut buttons to use.
Apple first indicated that CarPlay would be expanded to integrate more vehicle functions as part of its Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2022.
Porsche’s extended CarPlay capabilities have been rolled out as part of an update to the My Porsche mobile phone app. It provides a range of features, including displaying the state of charge of the vehicle battery, adjusting the air conditioning, and sending destinations to the navigation system.
Additionally, the My Porsche app connects with providers such as Apple Music, enabling integration with the associated apps in the car’s infotainment system, known as PCM.
Unlike previous iterations of PCM the added features allow select vehicle functions to be controlled within Apple CarPlay, such as managing their air conditioning, embedded navigation, radio, photos, and ambient lighting within the Apple CarPlay interface.
The functionality is also compatible with Apple’s Siri voice control assistant, allowing users to control car features using voice commands.
