Immaculate 30-year-old Honda Civic has just 12km on its odometer
Claimed to be the first-ever ‘EG’-generation Honda Civic built in Canada, this showroom-condition hatchback has – on average – driven less than 400 metres annually across the last three decades.
A North American YouTube personality has uncovered a 1990s Honda Civic with only a handful of kilometres on its odometer – more than 30 years after the hatchback rolled off the production line.
In a video uploaded to YouTube – spotted by Carscoops – Honda enthusiast ‘HondaPro Jason’ detailed the story of this EG-generation Civic from 1992, believed to be the first example built at the Japanese company’s Alliston factory in Ontario, Canada.
The claim is backed up by the Civic’s vehicle identification number (VIN) which ends in 0001, denoting the first vehicle to roll off the production line for the North American market – though Australian examples were built in Suzuka, Japan.
While more than 30 years have passed since this Honda Civic started its life, the red hatchback is still factory-fresh with an odometer showing just 7 miles (12 kilometres).
The car’s current owner, Dylan Sharp, told Jason the Civic spent much of its life at a Honda training facility before he bought the showroom-condition example – claiming it contained its original oil in the engine and production line markings underneath the chassis at the time of purchase.
In Canada, the EG-generation Honda Civic – produced between 1991 and 1995 globally – was offered in three trim levels; CX, VX, DX and Si.
This particular example is a Civic DX, powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine – capable of producing 76kW in 1992 – which drives the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.
While the Honda Civic’s Canadian price when it was new in 1992 is hard to substantiate, the equivalent Civic GL hatchback was priced from $21,900 plus on-road costs in Australia – approximately $46,500 when adjusted for inflation, or $700 less than the current-generation Civic VTi LX.
The low-kilometre Canadian Civic is currently being displayed at Image Honda in Hamilton, Ontario – approximately 90 minutes from where it was built – but Mr Sharp says he’s open to selling it, providing he gets an offer he can’t refuse.
Unfortunately, the more kilometres this Honda Civic travels, the lower its value will be – all but relegating it to be a museum piece or a time capsule for enthusiasts of factory-fresh cars.
