2024 Ram 1500 Big Horn coming to Australia in revamped line-up

With the older Ram 1500 on the way out locally, the Big Horn model could be the US pick-up giant’s new entry point in the Australian line-up, if government documents are a guide.

The 2024 Ram 1500 Big Horn could soon be the entry point for the company’s range of US pick-ups in Australia.

Ram’s parent company trademarked the name ‘Bighorn’ in Australia in October 2022, but Drive now understands the model is planned to replace the Laramie as the most affordable vehicle in the line-up by the end of this year.

While the Ram 1500 Big Horn is available as a six-seater in the US – spots for three people up front, and three in the rear – it is unclear whether the vehicle will be sold in this configuration locally.

Yesterday, Drive broke the news that the older Ram 1500 ‘DS Series’ is approaching the end of its five-year run in Australia – ahead of its planned phasing out in the US – leaving a gap for a more affordable version of the new Ram 1500 ‘DT Series’.

While the Ram 1500 ‘DT Series’ is unlikely to limbo to the same low price as the older Ram 1500 ‘DT Series’, the filing of a local trademark for Big Horn indicates there are plans afoot to fill the gap.

Curiously, while the variant is spelled as ‘Big Horn’ in two words the US, the trademark filing in Australia spells it as one word ‘Bighorn’.

While the Ram 1500 Big Horn is available with a mild-hybrid 3.6-litre V6 in the US, it’s expected the new variant will be available with the 5.7-litre ‘Hemi’ V8 available across the rest of the range in Australia.

However, a report out of the US in May 2023 suggested the Hemi’s days could be numbered, with the V8 potentially in line to be replaced by a newly-developed 3.0-litre twin-turbo ‘Hurricane’ six-cylinder petrol engine.

This will likely lead to a stampede as buyers snap up the last of the V8s, both here and in the US.
