“Track Maps intuitively identities the racetrack and layout, allowing the driver to run an automatic lap timer triggered when crossing the start/finish line, freeing brain capacity for hitting each apex, rather than a lap timer button,” Hyundai Australia said in a media bulletin.
“The position of the vehicle on the track is also shown in the multimedia display, along with live lap timing and a log of previous lap times (lap timing also displayed in the driver’s digital cluster).”
Our original story – published late last year – continues below unchanged.
Originally published 23 December 2021: The latest generation of Hyundai N performance cars will be able to navigate you to a race track – and then help you set your best lap time, courtesy of a new program built into the infotainment system.
Known as Track Maps, the system – available in the i20 N, i30 Sedan N and Kona N, but not the i30 N hatch or Fastback – allows a ‘circuit widget’ to be loaded into the the N program in the car’s infotainment system, which alerts the driver when they approach a “compatible” race track.
With the Hyundai driver’s intended track layout selected, the Track Maps serves as an automatic lap timer, employing what its name suggests – maps of the track – and in-built start/finish line locations to record the driver’s times without needing to press a button manually.
Track Maps will initially offer support for Sydney Motorsport Park (SMP) at Sydney’s Eastern Creek and Wakefield Park near Goulburn in the i30 Sedan N.
The Hyundai i20 N and Kona N initially trace only Sydney Motorsport Park – though Hyundai Australia promises “more than 10” new Australian tracks will be added with a free software update in mid-2022.
The final list of circuits to be added is yet to be confirmed, though Hyundai says they will be “major circuits around Australia”, indicating Hyundai N buyers from other states will be able to make use of the feature.
South Australia’s The Bend Motorsport Park could be one option – a circuit the South Korean company is familiar with, having hosted the i30 Fastback N’s media launch at the facility in 2019 – as could Winton (in Victoria) and Queensland Raceway, both venues of past Hyundai N Festival customer events.
The Track Maps software update for the 2022 Hyundai i20 N, Kona N and i30 Sedan N is available to download and install at home through a page on Hyundai’s website.
