Dear Drive: Tell me about the Volvo S60…

Our friend Mick is a curious listener intrigued by the awesome Volvo S60 range.

Mick asks:

I just wanted your thoughts on the Volvo S60?

Ah, the Volvo S60 range.

Fresh off the back of road-testing a wonderful 2022 Volvo V60 Cross Country – the wagon version of the Volvo S60 – our thoughts are that it’s one of the best value-for-money players in the new car marketplace.

Furthermore, as a regular sedan and wagon, you probably have some buying power at the dealership. The 2022 Volvo S60 starts from approximately $68,800 drive-away, and for that you receive a stunning-looking, all-wheel-drive European sedan with a 183kW/350Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

Standard features include every safety system known to man (almost), a 360-degree parking camera, a leather interior, sunroof, Polestar Engineered optimisation, and 19-inch wheels, just to get things started.

Buying a second-hand Volvo S60

Launched in 2019, there are currently second-hand Volvo S60 vehicles for sale.

The two most popular models were the Volvo S60 Inscription and Volvo S60 R-Design.

Both powered by a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder, S60 Inscription models have 187kW/350Nm, whereas the S60 R-Design has 197kW/400Nm.

Some vehicles were also fitted with an optional Polestar performance improvement pack.

It’s a very well-equipped car. Having spent a week in the estate version – called the V60 Cross Country – I can hand-on-heart say I’d own one if I could afford one.

I loved it because it’s rather unpretentious and as close to no-frills luxury as you can get, if such a thing exists. To explain, the styling is simple and doesn’t look expensive either.

A modern-day Kia electric car has more kerb appeal. However, inside you get things the Kia can’t provide, like subjectively awesome minimalist design, objectively better materials and, if equipped, one of the best value-for-money sound systems offered in a car today.

That’s the $3077 cost-extra Bowers & Wilkins stereo that in my books is a must. It punches well above its weight, and gives all music the colour it needs to shine bright and pique your interest.

The 2022 Volvo S60 and V60 ranges have been on sale in Australia since 2019, and sadly some drivelines/trim levels have been discontinued since launch.

It means you may need to shop dealer demonstrator or used if you’re after something specific.

Good luck!
