2023 BMW 3.0 CSL revival teased
It’s official: BMW is creating a modern version of one of its most iconic models, with bespoke styling and a rumoured million-dollar price.
The revived 2023 BMW 3.0 CSL – the modern version of the 1970s 3.0 CSL ‘Batmobile’ homologation special – has been teased for the first time, ahead of its anticipated reveal in the coming months.
Teased in a set of images posted to BMW M boss Frank van Meel’s Instagram, the new 3.0 CSL revival wears unique styling akin to the original, with tall front grilles akin to 2015’s 3.0 CSL Hommage concept, and wider front and rear haunches than a standard M4.
Sitting over the boot lid is a wing reminiscent of the original 1970s ‘Batmobile’, while there’s a secondary spoiler above the rear window, and a pair of circular front air intakes like the first 3.0 CSL.
However, not all body panels appear to be new; the side doors look to be borrowed from the standard M4 coupe, as do the headlights, and the shape of the vehicle’s ‘glasshouse’ (the side window opening).
As reported, the new 3.0 CSL is rumoured to be hand-built and limited to just 50 examples, with a price tag as high as €700,000 to €750,000 ($AU1.06 million and $AU1.14 million).
Power is set to come from a tuned version of the M4’s 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged ‘S58’ inline six-cylinder engine, tuned to develop 418kW (560 horsepower) – up 13kW over the limited-build M4 CSL, or 33kW more than the M4 Competition.
Drive will be sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission (6MT for short) – rather than the M4 CSL’s eight-speed automatic – as hinted by a ‘6MT FTW’ sticker on the rear of the teased car.
Other upgrades are set to include new 20-inch front and 21-inch rear alloy wheels, and a series of weight reduction measures, including the deletion of keyless entry, electric seats and parking sensors.
Production of the 2023 BMW 3.0 CSL is set to begin in November 2022 – indicating a full reveal is mere months away.
