Kerry Packer’s 1995 Porsche 993 Turbo offered for sale in Melbourne
The media magnate was a big fan of his cars, and this immaculate 993 Turbo is no exception.
It seems this is the week for 993 Turbos!
A few days ago we saw Denzel Washington’s 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo fetch more than US$400k at auction, and now we have another 993 Turbo, but with a more local ‘celebrity’ ownership.
Purchased new by publishing tycoon Kerry Packer in 1995, the silver over blue Porsche stayed in his ownership until his death in 2005. It was purchased from the estate by a long-time friend and business associate and is now offered for sale at Melbourne Porsche specialist, The PorschaDen Classic in Armadale.
Finished in Arctic Silver over Metropole Blue leather, the car has just over 35,000km on the clock and features a full service history noting regular and thorough care was taken over the car’s entire life.
While the car has been detailed and prepared to look its best for sale, it presents in near immaculate and totally original condition.
The owner’s book notes one of Packer’s businesses (when you’re a ‘magnate’ you never buy a car in your personal name) as the original owner, with the address listed as the Packer headquarters on 54 Park Street in Sydney.
Just 40 examples of the 993 Turbo were sold in Australia between 1995 and 1998, with Packer’s 1995 example costing $301,220 before options and on-road costs at the time.
Capable of a sub-4-second 0-100km/h sprint, the 993 Turbo was the first of the 911 Turbo family to offer twin-turbo performance (300kW/540Nm) and all-wheel drive. The type-993 was the final air-cooled 911 generation and was replaced by the type-996 in 1997 for ‘standard’ Carrera models and in 1999 for the more powerful 996 Twin-Turbo (309kW/560Nm).
Kerry Packer was no stranger to performance cars, with many stories told of his enjoyment of speed behind the wheel. A heavily customised Jaguar XJS once owned by the billionaire was sold for over $200,000 last year.
In terms of the silver Turbo, Matt Stoupas, Director of The PorschaDen notes that the car is expected to fetch in excess of $600,000 in today’s market.
Stoupas, who has nearly 40-years of experience with Porsche cars (he’s a Porsche trained technician as well as a prominent member of the Porsche club community) explains that the demand for modern-classics from Zuffenhausen is at an all-time high.
“Australian market cars are particularly desirable right now, even with buyers outside the country”, says Stoupas.
“The combination of lower right-hand-drive build numbers and a passionate ownership base means the cars are not only rarer but also well maintained and well supported.”
“Modern classics, like Kerry’s Turbo, not only represent a great investment but can also be enjoyed as a piece of art as well as a formidable road car.”
If you are in the market for an iconic modern classic, with some interesting provenance, the car is currently available. But act fast, as even without a famous owner, this thing will move quickly!
