BMW recalls one million vehicles with fire risk, Australia not affected

A short-circuiting PCV heater has forced a major BMW recall worldwide, however Australian-delivered cars are not affected for now.

German car giant BMW has recalled more than one million vehicles worldwide, citing an increased fire risk – however, no Australian-delivered examples are currently affected.

The recall – which is caused by a

short-circuiting PCV heater – comprises 1 Series, 3 Series, X3, 5 Series, X5 (below) and Z4 models, built between 2006 and 2016.

According to BMW, some vehicles have caught fire as a result of the fault. However, the risk is deemed “low” and owners have been assured their vehicles are safe to continue driving despite the recall.

A spokesperson for BMW Australia told Drive: “We can confirm that locally-delivered BMW Group vehicles are not affected”.

Overseas reports suggest the majority of the 1.03-million recalled vehicles were sold in the United States, Canada and South Korea. Owners have been directly contacted by BMW for parts to be replaced.

This is the third time in five years BMW has been forced to recall vehicles due to a fire risk; in 2017 it recalled 740,000 cars globally, and in 2019 it recalled 184,000 cars.
