2022 Tesla Model 3 prices rise by up to $5200 in Australia
The Tesla Model 3 electric car has been hit with its second price rise in two weeks – with the flagship Performance up by $5200, once mandatory Luxury Car Tax is thrown in.
Prices of the 2022 Tesla Model 3 electric car have quietly increased by between $3000 and $4000 across the range – or up to $5200 once Luxury Car Tax is included – just days after the base model increased by $1000.
Following yesterday’s increase in estimated wait times to between six and nine months, the Tesla Australia website now lists the rear-wheel-drive, entry-level Model 3 at $63,900 plus on-road costs, and the all-wheel-drive Model 3 Long Range at $76,200 plus on-road costs – increases of $3000.
The flagship Performance AWD variant is priced from $88,900 plus on-road costs (stamp duty, rego, CTP) and Luxury Car Tax, an increase of $4000.
Add Luxury Car Tax – which is included in the recommended retail prices (RRPs) claimed by most other new car makers in Australia – and the price rise totals $5200 (from $86,472 to $91,672 plus on-road costs).
The base and Long Range variants fall below the current Luxury Car Tax cut-off ($79,659 for “fuel-efficient vehicles”).
With standard equipment seemingly unchanged, a reason for the increased prices has not been confirmed. Drive has contacted Tesla Australia for further information, and will update this story upon a response.
The latest price rises mark the first time in nearly two years (July 2020) the entire Tesla Model 3 range in Australia has increased in price – with individual variants rising on certain occasions in the meantime, most notably a $1000 hike for the base Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive less than two weeks ago.
However, prices for all variants are down on the figures – approximately $66,000, $88,000, and $98,600 plus on-road costs respectively, including Luxury Car Tax – quoted at the Model 3’s Australian launch in July 2019, and the Performance’s high of $102,013 in July 2020.
As of publishing, drive-away prices (in New South Wales) now stretch between about $69,000 and $99,000, before government incentives and optional extras.
Less than 24 hours before the price rises went live on Tesla Australia’s website, estimated wait times were seen to increase from the “five to seven months” listed from February 2022 onwards, to “six to nine months”. Click here for more details.
The Tesla Model 3 was Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle in 2021, with 12,094 examples reported as sold – after a kerfuffle which saw the company initially provide incorrect sales numbers, before later issuing a correction.
