Current Subaru WRX stock running low, WRX STI sold out
A few months ahead of the arrival of an all-new model, Subaru has almost sold out of WRX sedans.
Stock of the outgoing 2021 Subaru WRX has dwindled to a handful of cars – ahead of the launch of a new model by the middle of 2022 – with the final WRX STI flagships already sold out.
Subaru Australia has confirmed to Drive only three brand-new examples of the soon-to-depart, fourth-generation WRX remain on showroom floors (as of 4 February) – following the arrival of the final shipment in October 2021.
The sole examples remaining are ‘standard’ WRX variants, with all current-generation WRX STI range-toppers already spoken for.
Sales have slowed significantly in recent months as production ended and stock has begun to dry up, with zero cars reported as sold in January 2022, according to VFACTS industry sales data – compared to 49 in December, 60 in November, 51 in October and 102 in September.
The imminent sale of the final WRX vehicles comes a few months ahead of the launch of an all-new WRX in the second quarter of 2022 (April to June), powered by a new 2.4-litre turbocharged flat-four engine, and available in a choice of sedan or Sportswagon (formerly Subaru Levorg) body styles.
A new WRX STI is rumoured to be revealed later in 2022, with an uprated version of the 2.4-litre boxer engine developing between 250kW and 300kW, according to the latest reports out of Japan. Australian launch timing for the STI is yet to be confirmed.
Prices for the new ‘standard’ WRX are yet to be confirmed, though with a more premium (and tech-dense) interior, larger body and engine, and availability of new active safety features, expect an increase over the current WRX’s base price of $40,990 before on-road costs.
That sharp base price – which began at $38,990 before on-road costs at launch in 2014 – and the availability of an automatic transmission helped the soon-to-depart model become the best-selling WRX generation in Australia, with 50,000 WRX (excluding STI) cars sold locally since 1994.
Approximately 18,500 examples of the fourth-generation WRX platform – across both standard WRX and halo WRX STI models – have been reported as sold since launch in 2014, accounting for approximately 30 per cent of the 60,000-plus cars sold over the car’s 28-year history.
