2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series earns five-star ANCAP safety rating
The first new Toyota LandCruiser in 14 years has received the full five-star rating in ANCAP crash tests, with strong scores in adult and pedestrian protection categories.
The 2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series four-wheel-drive has received top marks in the latest round of Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) testing.
The first vehicle to receive a 2022 datestamp on its safety rating, but tested to the same criteria introduced in 2020, the new LandCruiser 300 Series‘ five-star score applies to all variants of Toyota’s new four-wheel-drive except the off-road-focused GR Sport.
The LandCruiser performed best in the Adult Occupant Protection category, with a score of 89 per cent – though all four available points were deducted for Vehicle Compatibility, a criterion that grades the risk the test vehicle poses to occupants in an oncoming vehicle in a head-on crash.
Despite lacking a centre airbag (between the two front seats) – as seen in the Isuzu D-Max, GWM Ute, Hyundai Staria and other vehicles tested against the latest criteria – ANCAP awarded full marks for the movement of the driver towards the opposite side of the vehicle in the far-side impact test.
“Marginal” performance was noted for the driver’s chest in the frontal offset test, which since 2020 has used a Mobile Progressive Deformable Barrier, designed to simulate an oncoming car.
The Toyota LandCruiser earned a Child Occupant Protection score of 88 per cent, along with the second-highest Vulnerable Road User Protection (pedestrian and cyclist) score ever awarded under ANCAP’s latest testing protocols, thanks to “good performance” from the autonomous emergency braking’s pedestrian detection system.
ANCAP highlights the performance of the LandCruiser’s car-to-car autonomous emergency braking system “which avoided or mitigated collisions in most test scenarios,” in addition to its lane support system (or lane-keep assist), enabling a Safety Assist score of 77 per cent.
“The protection the Toyota LandCruiser offers to vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, is impressive for a large SUV,” said ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg.
“Larger, heavier vehicles always present higher risks for other road users and this is why ANCAP focusses on a vehicle’s ability to either avoid a crash, or reduce its impact, through our suite of Safety Assist tests. The safety specifications in the new generation Toyota LandCruiser are a welcome update to its predecessor.”
