2022 Mitsubishi Outlander scores five-star ANCAP safety rating

Mitsubishi’s new family SUV has earned top marks in independent safety testing, receiving the highest score ever awarded in the child occupant protection category under the latest protocols.

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander has received the full five-star rating from the independent Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) safety body.

Applicable to all 2.5-litre petrol variants, the Outlander performed well in all four categories of assessment – and recorded a 92 per cent score in the Child Occupant Protection area, the highest recorded to date under the latest ANCAP test criteria, introduced in 2020 (but set to be superseded in 2023).

It was joined by scores of 81 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 81 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection (pedestrians and cyclists), and 83 per cent for Safety Assist systems.

While full marks were awarded in the side impact and oblique pole tests, ANCAP noted “adequate to good” results in the frontal offset and full-width crash tests – with ‘marginal’ performance recorded for the driver’s upper legs in the offset test, and for the rear passenger’s head and chest in the full-width frontal crash.

While the new Mitsubishi SUV offers a centre airbag – typically designed to prevent the front passengers’ heads colliding in a side impact collision – ANCAP says the unit in the Outlander “did not meet ANCAP’s coverage requirements”, and subsequently applied a penalty.

“Good scores were also achieved …. in ANCAP’s Safety Assist area of assessment, with the AEB system capable of reacting to other stationary, braking, and slowing vehicles, and testing of the Junction Assist system fitted showed the Outlander brakes to avoid crashes when turning across the path of an oncoming vehicle,” said ANCAP in a statement.

The Mitsubishi Outlander is the second mid-size, non-luxury SUV to be tested under ANCAP’s latest safety protocols, following the Hyundai Tucson tested in 2021, which also received a five-star rating.

“The new Outlander offers an excellent safety package and is a comprehensive offering. Mitsubishi have clearly prioritised the safety of both vehicle occupants and other road users in the new Outlander, and should be applauded for this 5 star result,” said ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg.
