2022 BMW M8 Competition update revealed

Updated versions of BMW’s most powerful 8 Series models are expected to reach Australia later this year, with new colour and wheel options, a larger touchscreen and available carbon-fibre seats.

The updated 2022 BMW M8 Competition range has been unveiled in Europe, ahead of first arrivals in Australian showrooms likely to occur later this year.

Revealed alongside an updated 8 Series range, the high-performance M8 – currently only available in Australia in flagship Competition guise, in Coupe and Gran Coupe body styles – gains new exterior, interior and personalisation options for 2022, though the updates aren’t as extensive as a typical mid-life facelift for the BMW brand.

Exterior changes are limited largely to a new 20-inch star-spoke alloy wheel design, and the option of ‘Shadow Line’ dark inserts for the adaptive laser headlights.

Buyers can choose from eight new colours: Skyscraper Grey Metallic, Brooklyn Grey Metallic, Isle of Man Green Metallic, BMW Individual Lacquer Tanzanite Blue Metallic. Frozen Pure Grey Metallic, Frozen Deep Grey Metallic, Frozen Deep Green Metallic and Frozen Tanzanite Blue Metallic.

Inside, the central touchscreen has been enlarged from 10.25 to 12.3 inches across, while buyers can now option the M Carbon bucket seats from the smaller M3 and M4, with illuminated ‘M8’ headrest logos, heating and electric adjustment for both seats, and memory functionality on the driver’s side.

The standard-fit ‘M sports seats’ can now be had in a combination of Merino leather and Alcantara, or a new two-tone Black and Sakhir Orange colour option. Alcantara now adorns the instrument panel and upper door cards, when the leather and Alcantara seat trim is optioned.

Under the bonnet, the revised M8 Competition retains the current car’s 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged ‘S63’ petrol V8, sending 460kW and 750Nm to the road through an eight-speed automatic transmission and a switchable M xDrive all-wheel drive system.

BMW claims a 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds for the Coupe and Gran Coupe, increasing to 3.3 seconds for the not-for-Australia Convertible.

The less potent 441kW/750Nm base M8 (non-Competition) variant previously offered in overseas markets – but never in Australia – has been discontinued.

The 2022 BMW M8 Competition range is expected to arrive in Australian showrooms later this year. Local pricing and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
