Mercedes-Benz reveals Project Maybach concept

Mercedes has revealed its second (and final) project with late American fashion designer Virgil Abloh, an off-road-ready electric coupe.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the Project Maybach, a new off-road-themed concept car from its Mercedes-Maybach luxury marque, designed in conjunction with the late American fashion designer Virgil Abloh, who passed away over the weekend.

On display at the Rubell Museum in Miami, USA, the Project Maybach was styled in collaboration between Abloh and Mercedes-Benz design boss Gorden Wagener – the second concept designed by the pair, following the Project Geländewagen revealed late last year.

Built from scratch, the Project Maybach is billed as a two-seat, all-electric off-road coupe that “combines huge Gran Turismo proportions, large off-road wheels and distinctive attachments”, according to the German car maker, with boxy bodywork, circular LED front and rear lighting signatures, and a tan and black paint scheme.

Measuring nearly six metres long, the Project Maybach’s transparent bonnet houses solar cells “

that increase the [vehicle’s] imagined range”, while inside highlights include two leather and textile-trimmed seats, a ‘yoke’ shaped steering wheel, and an expansive glass roof also used to support arched roll bars and a roof rack.

“Mercedes-Benz is devastated to hear of the passing of Virgil Abloh … Now opening the world of our collaboration, and Virgil’s unique vision, to the public we want to respectfully celebrate the work of a truly unique design talent, who created endless possibilities for collaboration through his unbridled imagination and inspired all that knew his work,” reads a statement from Mercedes-Benz AG.

If you’re hoping for a production version of the Project Maybach, we have bad news, as the concept was designed with “complete creative freedom … untethered by production requirements” – ruling out a showroom-bound model.
