Tesla app outage locks drivers out of cars

The electric vehicle maker’s smartphone app went down for a few hours late last week, preventing some owners from accessing their cars – though smart cards and key fobs were still on hand to provide access.

Tesla’s smartphone companion app suffered a worldwide outage late last week, preventing remote access to owners’ vehicles, and locking many out of their cars.

Initially reported in the US – before it was later confirmed as a worldwide issue, incorporating Australia – the outage saw many Tesla owners presented with a ‘500 server error’, preventing them from conducting remote control functions with their vehicle including locking/unlocking and the ‘Summon’ feature.

The outage was resolved within a few hours on Saturday morning (Australian east-coast time), with Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirming to an affected Model 3 owner in South Korea: “[It] looks like we may have accidentally increased verbosity of network traffic.”

“Apologies, we will take measures to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” Musk added.

While a wide group of owners were unable to access their cars using the app, Tesla vehicles are also delivered with a traditional key fob in the Model S and Model X, or a smart card in the Model 3 and Model Y – meaning drivers were still able to unlock and drive their vehicles, without the app.
