2023 BMW X1 M35i spy photos

The next-generation BMW X1 will gain an M Performance version for the first time, with sporty styling and turbo four-cylinder power expected.

The 2023 BMW X1 M35i small performance SUV has been snapped testing in Europe, ahead of its full reveal expected in early 2023.

Following earlier prototypes of standard combustion-engined X1 and all-electric iX1 models spied over the last 18 months, the new photos provide a look at the performance-focused M35i model – the first time BMW’s performance arm has left its mark on the small SUV, albeit in mid-tier M Performance form.

While there’s still copious camouflage covering the prototype’s finer styling details, key BMW M styling cues can be seen poking through the wrap, including larger wheels and brakes, a lower ride height, sporty side skirts, and unique rear diffuser.

Interestingly, the test car sports four exhaust tips – a key calling card of BMW’s full-fat M models, from the M2 coupe to the X6 M large SUV. While this would suggest a full X1 M is on the way, it’s more likely BMW M is simply spreading previously-exclusive styling cues across its entire range.

This approach is seen in the new M440i Gran Coupe and i4 M50 performance models, which wear the M division’s signature ‘aerodynamic’ mirrors, despite not being full M models. It’s also similar to rival Mercedes-AMG, which debuted its ‘Panamericana’ grille on the GT R supercar, before rolling it out across every model in its portfolio.

These images don’t provide a look at the new X1 M35i’s cabin, though past sightings have suggested it will benefit from the new iDrive 8 dashboard seen in the new 2 Series Active Tourer, with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.7-inch touchscreen and BMW’s latest software.

Under the bonnet, it’s highly likely the new X1 M35i will be powered by an evolution of the Bavarian brand’s 2.0-litre ‘B48’ turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, paired to an automatic transmission (likely an eight-speed torque-converter ‘box) and front-biased all-wheel drive.

However, it remains to be seen how much power the engine produces – and whether it’s given a performance bump over the 225kW/450Nm quoted by BMW’s current range of M35i models, comprising the M135i hatch, M235i Gran Coupe sedan and X2 M35i small SUV.

Should the engine receive a power bump, expect the 0-100km/h time to fall below the current X2 M35i’s 4.9-second claimed dash.

It’s possible the engine – which will be updated and badged as the ‘B48 TU2’ internally – could be augmented with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, as per the aforementioned 2 Series Active Tourer. Don’t rule out a switch to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, either.

The 2022 BMW X1 will enter production in July 2022, according to proven BMW insiders, meaning a global unveiling early in 2022.

However, the M35i variant isn’t slated to roll off the Leipzig, Germany production line until July 2023 – likely placing an Australian launch in the fourth quarter of 2023, some two years away from now.
