2022 Mazda BT-50 price and specs – UPDATE

Mazda’s ute range picks up a new engine option from its twin under the skin, the Isuzu D-Max, along with more equipment – and a handy button to easily disable over-zealous lane-keeping tech.

UPDATE, 19 November 2021: Mazda Australia has confirmed drive-away pricing for its updated BT-50 ute – the full table has been added towards the bottom of this story.

21 September 2021: The 2022 Mazda BT-50 ute has been updated for the new model year, with the option of a new 1.9-litre diesel engine shared with partner Isuzu, and a flagship SP variant.

The entry-level XS grade – available in 4×2 single-cab, 4×2 dual-cab, or 4×4 dual-cab layouts – has been added for 2022, powered by a new 110kW/350Nm 1.9-litre turbocharged diesel engine shared with its twin under the skin, the Isuzu D-Max (detailed here).

This is exclusively paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, and is rated to tow up to three tonnes (rather than 3500kg on 3.0-litre turbo-diesel models).

The base model Mazda BT-50 XS variant rides on 17-inch steel wheels, with all other standard equipment items unchanged from the identically-specified XT variant, which offers the familiar 140kW/450Nm 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Stepping up, the Mazda BT-50 XTR is powered by the existing 3.0-litre engine and six-speed auto shared with Isuzu.

The Mazda BT-50 GT trim – exclusively available as a 4×4 dual-cab pick-up – gains creature comforts such as electrically-adjustable seats and parking sensors, while a sport-themed Mazda BT-50 SP variant with black accents and unique features is also offered for the first time (pictured above, and detailed at the bottom of this story).

The flagship Mazda BT-50 Thunder dual-cab – based on the GT, and adding a steel bullbar, LED light bar, 18-inch black alloys, side steps, and tub liner – retains its place at the top of the range.

Following customer feedback, the Mazda BT-50’s intrusive lane-keep assist system has also been updated for improved functionality.

Drivers can now disable the at times over-zealous lane-keeping assistance tech by holding down a button on the steering wheel rather than going through several steps in the menu while the vehicle is stopped. It’s unclear why this simple solution is not yet offered on the Isuzu D-Max twin, which uses the same tech.

Seven colours will be offered across the updated range: Ice White, True Black, Mica Ingot, Silver Metallic, Concrete Grey, Mica Gun. Blue Mica, Rock Grey, Mica Red, and Volcano Mica.

The 2022 Mazda BT-50 is due in Australian showrooms next January.
