2022 Maserati Grecale SUV to offer four-cylinder, V6 and electric options – report

The new Grecale will be offered with 2.0-litre mild-hybrid four-cylinder and 3.0-litre Nettuno V6 engines, both with turbochargers, all-wheel drive, automatic gearboxes and familiar underpinnings.

The upcoming 2022 Maserati Grecale mid-size luxury SUV will be available with a choice of four-cylinder and V6 engines – with an all-electric model to follow in later months – according to a new European report.

British publication Autocar reports the Grecale will launch with two petrol engine options, led by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology (shared with the larger Ghibli sedan) developing 221kW and 400Nm – likely fitted to base GT and mid-spec Modena variants,

Available on higher grades – possibly exclusive to the range-topping, high-performance Trofeo – will be a “detuned” version of the MC20 supercar’s bespoke 3.0-litre twin-turbo ‘Nettuno’ V6. Outputs aren’t quoted for the SUV, though expect a significant step down from the exotic’s 463kW and 730Nm outputs.

The dual-tier engine line-up spells the end of the 3.9-litre Ferrari V8 under the bonnet of a Maserati – with the Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante Trofeo trio marking the end of the road – while there’s no mention of the older 3.0-litre ‘F160’ twin-turbo V6 used in larger Maserati models. Diesel power won’t be offered.

Autocar reports all Grecale models will use an eight-speed automatic transmission developed by Germany’s ZF, driving all four wheels through a rear-biased ‘Q4’ all-wheel-drive system developed by Alfa Romeo, capable of sending 100 per cent of torque to the rear axle.

The Alfa Romeo link is no coincidence, as the British outlet confirms industry rumours that the Grecale rides on the rear-drive Giorgio platform underpinning the Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV and Giulia sedan – the same chassis set for abandonment by its Italian maker in the coming years, following a reported incompatibility with electrified powertrains.

Despite that, the Grecale will be available with an all-electric Folgore variant, set for unveiling by the end of 2022. Details are thin on the ground thus far, though earlier Maserati product plans have suggested three electric motors, an 800-volt charging system and sub-three-second 0-100km/h performance.

Autocar quotes wider wheel tracks than an equivalent Stelvio – said to boost interior space – with the Grecale to offer 19, 20, or 21-inch alloy wheel options, and a choice of fixed coil-spring, adaptive coil-spring or three-chamber adaptive air suspension.

Other highlights include a trick chassis management system, which uses torque vectoring (by braking) to maintain the driver’s desired line through a corner.

The Grecale’s exterior remains under (albeit thin) wraps, though its interior recently surfaced without camouflage in images published by Cochespias, showing a digital instrument cluster, a digitised multi-function version of Maserati’s traditional clock, and a floating twin-screen central cluster with separate displays for infotainment and climate controls.

The 2022 Maserati Grecale will be revealed in full in the northern spring of 2022 (March to May), after semiconductor shortages saw its premiere delayed from an initial mid-November unveiling.

An Australian launch is slated for the second half of 2022.
