2022 Ford Ranger countdown: Covers come off tonight at 6:15pm Sydney-Melbourne time

The first new Ford Ranger in a decade will be unveiled later today, as Ford’s countdown clock heads into the final hours.

The 2022 Ford Ranger – the first new model in a decade – will be unveiled at 6:15pm today, and Drive will have extensive coverage going live as soon as the media embargo lifts.

Earlier this month, Ford launched a countdown clock ahead of the 24 November 2021 reveal.

Prices and exact arrival timing are yet to be released, but Ford is expected reveal key details of the new model as well as a vast range of photos.

Drive has previously forecast the new model will be available in Australian showrooms from the first half of next year with a choice of twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, or single-turbo 3.0-litre V6 diesel power.

The 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor and 2022 Ford Everest are expected to follow a few months later.

The latest teaser video comes as the runout version of the Ford Ranger chases down the Toyota HiLux in the annual sales race.

If sales of the Ford Ranger keep climbing – and deliveries of the Toyota HiLux continue to be slowed due to stock shortages and production delays – there is a chance the Ford Ranger could become Australia’s top-selling vehicle outright for 2021.

It would be the first time the Ford Ranger has led the Australian new-car market outright – and the first time a Ford vehicle has topped the local sales charts in 26 years.

In the latest instalment in Ford’s drip-feed media campaign, the company says it has “reimagined, redesigned, and reengineered” the Ranger to be “the smartest, most versatile and most capable Ranger ever.”

Ford said it conducted more than 5000 interviews with Ranger owners – and worked alongside “hundreds” of owners across a number of ute brands in “dozens” of research clinics around the world – to determine what features to include in the new model.

While the 2022 Ford Ranger looks all new – and does have significant engineering changes – the frame is largely carried over from before (but with extra room for the V6), and the cabin structure is the same shape and size (but the doors have different sheetmetal).

That said, the 2022 Ford Ranger will look different from every angle, and the company claims it has stepped up road-holding and refinement.
