2021 Toyota HiLux named “best ute in the world”

Australia’s number-one selling vehicle beat out the Isuzu D-Max and Jeep Gladiator for the honours.

The Toyota HiLux has been named the best ute in the world at the 6th International Pick-Up Award, in Lyon, France.

The HiLux beat out the Isuzu D-Max and Jeep Gladiator for the honour which is awarded every two years as part of the International Van of the Year Award.

“Every other year since 2009, the International Pick-up Award (IPUA) is presented to the most efficient 1-tonne pick-up truck in business today,” said Jarlath Sweeney, Chairman of the International Van of the Year Award jury.

“As a multi-functional vehicle produced and sold globally, both the product and marketplace continue to evolve with many brands setting high standards in performance, safety, driver and passenger comfort.”

The three finalists underwent rigorous testing by an expert panel of judges in Croatia earlier this year.

“… This award is for us a recognition of all the inherent qualities of HiLux, with even more capabilities,” said Didier Gambart, Vice President of Toyota Motor Europe Sales, Marketing & Customer Experience.

“… we would like to thank all the jury members for their recognition. HiLux is part of Toyota’s LCV (light commercial vehicle) line-up and despite [the] semi-conductor shortage, we will have achieved in Europe a new LCV absolute sales record with a six-digit sales number.”

The Toyota HiLux continues to be popular around the world, the number-one selling vehicle in 14 countries including Australia, Argentina, Panama, South Africa and Fiji. Toyota sells the popular ute in 140 countries.

This the first time Toyota has claimed the International Pick-Up Award. Previous winners include the Volkswagen Amarok (twice), Ford Ranger (twice) and the Nissan Navara.
