2018 BMW X2 unveiled

After much teasing, the new BMW X2 has been revealed as the “coupe” companion to the X1 crossover.

Described by the company as the “cool X” model, the new X2 features an upside down kidney grille, as well as a sportier roof line and more aggressive styling than its X1 sibling.

There’s also BMW badging on the C-pillar, which is said to link the X2 to classic coupes from the company’s past.

Measuring 4360mm long, 1824mm wide, 1526mm tall, and riding on a 2670mm wheelbase, the X2 is 79 shorter overall, has an 86mm lower roof height, and is 3mm wider than the X1. Both vehicles ride on the same wheelbase.

With the rear seats up, the X2’s boot is said to swallow 470 litres of gear, rising to 1355L with the rear pews folded down.

The X2 will be offered in three trim grades: base, M Sport, and M Sport X, which is said to be inspired by rally racing. The M Sport variants get more aggressive bumper treatments, have larger 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels, and sit on a suspension setup that’s stiffer and 10mm closer to the ground.

They also lose the black sill and wheel arch cladding found on the base model, with the M Sport featuring body colour trim, and the M Sport X gaining grey units.

When it goes on sale in Europe, the X2 will be available with two diesel powertrain options, and a solitary petrol engine. The sDrive20i features a 141kW/280Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol mill driving the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Both diesel variants are fitted with a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine hooked up to all four wheels and an eight-speed automatic. The xDrive20d model has 140kW/400Nm on hand, while the xDrive25d has 170kW/450Nm against its name.

Later, BMW will add the three-cylinder sDrive18i, and four-cylinder xDrive20i, sDrive18d and xDrive18d drivetrain options to the menu.

Available features in the X2 range include LED tail-lights, LED headlamps, colour head-up display, LED interior mood lighting, Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple CarPlay compatibility, rear-view camera, and panoramic sunroof.

For less expensive models, a 6.5-inch infotainment screen sits atop the dashboard, while pricier versions have an 8.8-inch screen.

Stop and go cruise control, lane keeping assistance, automated braking with pedestrian detection at urban speeds, and semi-automated parking assistance are among the safety features available on the X2.
