2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe spied
The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been spied undergoing testing in Germany.
Given the car’s proportions and the position of the front wheels in relation to the front doors, the 2 Series Gran Coupe looks as though its based on a front-wheel drive platform, most likely shared with the next-generation BMW 1 Series.
The move to a front- and all-wheel drive architecture shared with the Mini brand will give BMW’s range of next-generation small vehicles much more spacious interiors than today’s models.
Motivation for the new 2 Series Gran Coupe, as well as the new 1 Series hatch, is expected to come from a selection of three- and four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. Given the transverse engine layout, six-cylinder motors are highly unlikely.
The most powerful and sportiest variants of the new 1 and 2 Series ranges will likely be offered with all-wheel drive.
As is common for BMW prototypes at this stage in their development, the 2 Series Gran Coupe pictured here is clad from head to toe in camouflage. Styling details are further hidden by the use of temporary lighting units and false body panels.
Despite that, we can see the 2 Series Gran Coupe has frameless side windows and a fastback body.
When it goes on sale, the smallest Gran Coupe’s most natural competitor will be the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA.
