2018 MG 6 revealed
A new-generation 2018 MG 6 has been revealed today, debuting as a replacement for the now eight-year-old first-generation model sold here as the MG 6 Plus.
The company has yet to release full details on the new model – or a full gallery – and it has likewise yet to confirm Australian details, although a brief quote from the company’s local arm today suggests we’ll see it here next year.
Taking its cues from the E-Motion coupe concept revealed earlier this year, the new MG 6 adds an extra pair of doors and a taller roofline to match.
Front-end styling shows an obvious connection to both the E-Motion concept and the new ZS SUV, marking another step away from the look worn by the brand’s current models, towards a design reminiscent of Mazda and Mercedes-Benz styling.
Inside, the new 6 appears markedly improved, gaining a more premium look with Volkswagen and Jaguar overtones – although it remains to be seen if its fit, finish and materials will show any great improvement.
The photos released today suggest some variants – if not all – will feature large instrument cluster and main dash displays, with the latter featuring the same new infotainment system offered with the LDV T60 that was detailed for Australia today.
The mid-sized MG 6’s platform is again shared with the Chinese-market Roewe brand – both being owned by the giant SAIC.
A 2715mm wheelbase underpins the new model, giving it a longer footprint than the Skoda Octavia (2686mm) but shorter than the Mazda 6 (2830mm).
Further details, including powertrains and equipment options, are still to come.
Australia
As with other markets, Australian details for the new MG 6 are still to be confirmed. Indeed, it is unclear if we will see it at all, although comment today suggests we’ll learn more in the new year.
“It is pleasing to see news of the updated MG 6 from SAIC Motor in Shanghai,” said Zhu Chao, MG Motor Australia’s general manager.
“Right now, MG Motor Australia’s focus is our SUV product in Australia, and launching the ZS in market later this year. We’ll confirm details with regards to the new MG 6 in 2018.”
