2018 Honda Civic Type R inspires autonomous lawnmower… and now we want one
As part of Honda celebrating 25 years of two of its most iconic nameplates – Fireblade and Type R – the Japanese brand has revealed two fully-functioning special-edition ‘prototypes’ of its robotic lawnmower known as Miimo.
One is inspired by the latest version of Honda’s well-known CBR Fireblade motorbike (a bike which can trace its history back to 1992), but the other – the one we really dig – takes inspiration from the all-new Honda Civic Type R hot hatch.
Finished in Championship White and sporting the requisite red ‘H’ badges front and rear, the Miimo Type R features black and red bumpers, ‘Type R’ decals down both flanks, and a scaled down copy of the real Civic Type R’s triple-outlet exhaust system, fabricated using 32mm and 25mm stainless steel tubing.
Even the Type R’s monster rear wing has been carried over to the self-operating mower, with the replica of the eye-catching spoiler constructed of high-density foam board, with its centre section wrapped in carbon-fibre vinyl to match the look of the one perched onto the rear end of the real 228kW/400Nm front-wheel-drive manual-only hatchback.
As for the Miimo CBR Fireblade, it’s painted in the famous sports bike’s mandatory red, white, and blue tri-colour paint scheme, with Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) branding.
As final touches, the Miimo CBR Fireblade is packed with 45 working LED headlights and tail-lights, with the Miimo Type R equipped with 40.
First introduced to global markets in 2013, Miimo is a self-charging autonomous lawn mower that Honda says is, “perfect for those wanting a beautiful lawn every day, but would rather not, or cannot, mow it themselves.” Seems legit.
Available in the UK in three variants – a Miimo 310, Miimo 520, and Miimo 3000 – prices range from £1999 to £2499 ($3200-$4000).
With the first Honda Civic Type Rs arriving into Australia just this week, first deliveries of the Japanese hot hatch are due to kick off any day now.
