The new 2018 Volvo XC60 has been detailed in an online walkaround video this week, featuring the company’s senior product manager Hans Nilsson.
In the eight-minute clip, Nilsson reveals the new SUV will be offered in three trim levels like its 90-Series stablemates – Momentum, R-Design and Inscription – while a range of alloy wheels will be offered, from 18 to 22 inches in diameter.
Both the head- and tail-lights are full LED units, including the signature ‘Thor’s hammer’ daytime-running light signature. Around the back, the electric tailgate can be controlled by the key or via waving your foot under the rear bumper.
Air suspension will be offered as an option, and will allow owners to lower the ride height by 2.0 inches (51mm) to make loading items into the boot easier.
Inside, an opening panoramic sunroof will be included as standard in Europe, while the front seats can be had with power adjustment and massage functions depending on model.
Drivers are treated to a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, with customisable graphics depending on drive mode. A Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 15 speakers will be offered, along with dual- and quad-zone climate control air conditioning.
The XC60 has a claimed turning circle of 37.4 feet (11.4m) kerb-to-kerb, while parking and tight manoeuvres are made easier with standard front and rear parking sensors with reversing camera – a 360-degree camera system and park assist pilot will also be offered.
Keeping occupants safe on the road are a range of new driver assistance technologies, including city safety autonomous emergency braking which now works at up to 60km/h with pedestrian and large animal detection, emergency manoeuvre assist, lane keep assist. blind spot assist.
At the front axle is a double wishbone suspension system, matched to an integral multilink design at the rear.
Three chassis types will be offered – Standard, Sport (R-Design) and the optional Air Suspension – with the latter also including adaptive dampers.
Vehicles equipped with air suspension and adaptive dampers feature adjustable ride height and suspension feel depending on drive mode and road conditions.
Finally, Nilsson gives a first look at the T8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which features the same 300kW petrol-electric drivetrain as T8 versions of the larger XC90.
Unique to the T8 are additional Hybrid and Pure (electric) driving modes, along with a special gear knob made out of crystal glass. Under the centre tunnel is a 10.4kWh battery, which can be charged via the grid or braking.
The front axle is powered by the 2.0-litre twin-charged petrol engine, while the rear is spun by the electric motor.
First revealed at the Geneva motor show in March, the new XC60 is longer and wider than the current car, including a wheelbase that is roughly 90mm more accommodating.
A range of petrol and diesel engines will be on offer, along with the aforementioned T8 plug-in hybrid.
Australia
Volvo’s local arm has already confirmed the new-generation XC60 will go on sale locally in the fourth quarter of 2017, though specific timing is still to be confirmed.
It’s an important model for the Swedish brand, racking up 2134 sales in 2016 (up 25 per cent), which makes it Volvo’s top-seller – though it still trails behind the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Land Rover Discovery Sport.
